Honduras

WEFTA has collaborated with Save the Children Honduras, providing funding while Save the Children provided construction and fiscal oversight for projects serving twelve rural communities. Projects have included repairs and upgrades to community water systems (repairs to distribution lines, pressure break tanks) as well as latrine construction.

More than 60% of the population of Honduras live below the poverty line, with 20% of the rural population lacking access to either proper sanitation or to safe drinking water. As such, in November 2013, WEFTA signed an MOU with USAID ACCESO, a US-government-funded development program in Honduras, to collaborate on multiple water and sanitation projects in western Honduras through the end of 2014. The program’s goals are to improve living conditions, improve existing water systems and develop new ones, decrease waterborne diseases, protect the environment, and engage communities to work on the projects thus creating a sense of ownership. USAID ACCESO will provide technical assistance and training of communities and matching funds of up to 60% of the program costs. WEFTA will design and promote the projects, engage the benefiting communities and raise 40% of program costs. Further collaborative work with Save the Children Honduras is planned as funding becomes available.

Trip Reports

Every time one we send a crew on a trip to either help or assess a community, we ask our volunteers to write a trip report that details the trip through their eyes. These documents will give you both a look into what it is like being a volunteer and a different perspective on our efforts to help communities. The photo-based reports redirect you to our Google+ photo albums. For projects more than five years old check out our Archives page.
